High Definition Television is more commonly known as HD or HDTV and is a new standard combining both high-resolution pictures and Dolby Digital Surround Sound to give fantastical televison experiences. The picture quality of HD is clear, sharp and intensely colorful.
HD has 3 different resolutions, 720p, 1080i and 1080p
Giving a pixel resolution of 1280x720, this is the lower end of HD compatible resolutions and now rarely seen.
Giving a pixel resolution of 1980x1080, this is an interlaced format making it less superior to 1080p.
1080p has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, however, 1080p uses progressive scan which gives a much smoother image.
